Six-bedroom Grade II-listed house for sale in Shipbourne, near Tonbridge, by famous architect Walter Gropius

Would you like to own this £2.5 million distinctive designer house which was state of the art when it was built back in 1937?

The six-bedroom Grade II-listed house in Shipbourne, on the market for just under £2.5m, was designed by architects Walter Gropius and Maxwell Fry, with Gropius going on to found the famous Bauhaus Schools of architecture.

The building has a hardwood frame and dark Canadian redwood cedar cladding, and is the only known weather-boarded house in England by the architect.

It uses similar materials to the ones Gropius chose for Sommerfeld House in Berlin, his first major work after the First World War.

With around four-and-a-half acres of private gardens, orchards and paddock, and with a private drive leading to it along a no through lane, it may be reminiscent today of a school science block, but its cutting edge and one-of-a-kind design, and original features also earn it listed status.

The L-shaped property has a single-storey northern wing and a two-storey main block, where there is a family room with French windows; a long reception room with an original copper-headed fireplace and a dining room, with an original marble dining table, sideboards and copper wall lights.

The library has walnut shelving and a log-burner and connects to the main hall with the extended kitchen and breakfast room, where the units are handmade and there is a four-oven Aga.

The single-storey northern wing is home to two bedrooms, a bathroom and a study, and four further bedrooms on the first floor, including the main bedroom which has a dressing room and en suite bathroom with access to a balcony and steps down to the garden.
