Ferry link with Boulogne may return by Easter

A CROSS Channel ferry link between Boulogne and south coast ports, including Ramsgate and Folkestone, could be re-established. The speculation follows a meeting in the French town to discuss its rejuvenation as a thriving port.

The Sussex port of Newhaven was also highlighted as a option in talks between Boulogne Chamber of Commerce, the Boulogne Office de Tourisme and councillors in the town. It is understood that an international firm called Corsica Ferries could be interested in the running the link and a Greek shipping company has also been mentioned. Boulogne hopes the service will be up and running by Easter.

However, the run-down state of Folkestone’s port and the fact that it is privately owned, by Sea Containers, could favour Ramsgate.

Port Ramsgate was taken over by Thanet council when Sally Ferries pulled out several years ago. It is one of few ports managed by a local authority. Council leader, Cllr Richard Nicholson, said: “The council continues to negotiate with several possible passenger operators and we are also looking to expand our freight service.

“We want to see a thriving passenger service re-established in Ramsgate but we have to bide our time. The shipping world is notoriously secretive about its plans and we respect that. However, we are in an extremely fortunate position because our passenger ferry terminal remains in excellent condition and could be easily recommissioned in a very short time. We have the berthing capabilities to handle any of the vessels that are sailing in this part of the world.”

Luc Tassart, director of the Boulogne tourist office, said further meetings are planned and added: "I would prefer the link to run from Folkestone to Boulogne, but I understand there could be problems at the Folkestone end. It is a privately owned port and this could cause difficulties. I cannot say too much, as I have to be careful with the information I have. I hope everything will be decided before March so that it could run from Easter.”

A spokesman for Shepway council said that although no official approach had yet been made, he was aware of the rumours.
