Tucked away at the heart of St Michaels Care Home in Westgate-on-Sea is a true hidden gem – a beautifully maintained garden that offers so much more than just a pretty view. Bursting with colour, scent and seasonal charm, this peaceful outdoor space provides a welcome retreat and a vital source of wellbeing for residents.
During the warmer months, raised flower beds come to life as residents gather to pot plants, tend to herbs and nurture vibrant blooms.
These gardening sessions offer more than just enjoyment – they bring a sense of purpose, help maintain mobility and support mental wellness by encouraging mindfulness and connection with nature. Being outdoors, moving gently and engaging in growing something tangible are proven to boost mood, reduce stress and support physical health in older adults.
One proud resident, Ron, couldn’t hide his delight when he successfully grew six tomatoes for the first time last year. This summer, he’s already planning to beat his record!
The garden also acts as a lively social hub. On sunny days, you'll find residents enjoying coffee, prosecco or even a cheeky jug of Pimm’s while chatting with loved ones or fellow residents under the parasols. For those who enjoy a little friendly competition, outdoor games such as bowls, skittles and quizzes keep both body and mind active.
Adding to the vibrancy, St Michaels regularly hosts live outdoor entertainment – from acoustic performances to seasonal celebrations – all enjoyed from comfortable shaded seating areas.
One of the most anticipated events is the annual Summer Party and Open Afternoon, a joyful celebration for residents, their families and the wider community. This year’s event takes place on Friday July 25 from 2pm to 4pm, and promises a fun-filled afternoon with live music from The Moments Duo, delicious BBQ food and a warm welcome to all. Visitors can explore the home, meet residents and experience the unique atmosphere that makes St Michael’s so special.
At St Michaels Care Home, the garden isn’t just a beautiful space – it’s a cherished extension of home life, brimming with laughter, friendship and the therapeutic power of the great outdoors.
