Folkestone pensioner calls for First World War memorial support

A Folkestone pensioner has called on the local community to support plans for the erection of a First World War memorial and to let Folkestone & Hythe District Council know in writing.

Bob Mouland called on residents in the district to send letters or emails directly to Folkestone & Hythe District Council Leader, Cllr Jim Martin, claiming that people should “politely remind” the Green Party councillor “what that generation did for us.”

.

A written statement by Mr Mouland read: “The leader of Folkestone & Hythe District Council, Councillor Jim Martin (Green Party) needs your written views in writing, as to whether or not a memorial should be erected on the outside of the dis-used Victorian Latrine, that commonwealth soldiers entered into in 1914-1918 before rejoining their regiments going down Church Slope Road, now named the Road of Remembrance!

“Politely remind Councillor Martin of what that generation did for us! Lest we forget. The proposed memorial is a private funded project and WILL NOT cost the District Council a penny!”

“Please address your letters to the Leader of the District Council Councillor Jim Martin, Civic Centre, Folkestone, Kent, CT20 2QY or email jim.martin@folkestone-hythe.gov.uk.”

Mr Mouland, 76, has in the past campaigned for the restoration and upkeep of historic and traditional sites and monuments around the town.
