Weight loss jabs have had a dramatic impact on the lives of millions of people around the world who have struggled with their weight for years.

But there can be side effects, and though some are well documented, others have not been talked about in any depth.

Now dentists are expressing concerns about the impact fat jabs can have on your oral health including tooth decay, dry mouth and bad breath.

Nyree Whitley, Chief Clinical Officer at mydentist, says that there can be multiple side effects, some of them indirect.

Here she lists six problems people may experience - and the ways you can tackle them.

1 Medication-induced taste changes: Some people taking weight loss jabs report changes in how things taste, such as a metallic or altered flavour in the mouth. This can influence diet choice and potentially lead to increased cravings for sweeter foods, raising the risk of cavities.

2 Changes in oral microbiome: Altered eating habits and metabolism can affect the balance of bacteria in the mouth. This could potentially increase or decrease the risk for plaque buildup, gingivitis, or tooth decay.

3 Losing interest in your favourite foods: Weight loss medication can alter taste and some people find that their enjoyment of food changes significantly. Some celebrities have reported that they simply don’t enjoy the taste of food as much as they did before taking a weight loss jab such as Ozempic, and this seems to be a common side effect. You might start liking foods you previously avoided.

4 Nausea or vomiting can cause unwanted cavities: Nausea and vomiting are common side effects of weight loss jabs. If you’ve been sick, avoid brushing your teeth until at least 30 minutes afterwards as stomach acid can soften tooth enamel. Brushing too soon can spread the acid across the teeth, leading to enamel erosion. Your mouth may feel fresher but there is a risk of long term damage.

5 Dry mouth could lead to gum disease: Weight loss drugs can reduce saliva production, leading to a dry mouth. Saliva is essential for maintaining healthy bacteria levels and neutralising acid in the mouth, protecting teeth against decay. If you experience a consistently dry mouth, you’ll be at increased risk so it’s important to address symptoms early.

6 Acid reflux and bad breath: Some people may experience acid reflux, where stomach acid can flow back into the mouth. This can contribute to enamel erosion and increase sensitivity or the risk of cavities. If you notice your teeth becoming sensitive and relief doesn’t come from using a sensitive toothpaste, go and see your dentist

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR TEETH AND ORAL HEALTH WHILE TAKING WEIGHT LOSS DRUGS

Stay hydrated: Carry a large water bottle and take frequent sips, especially before meals and at bedtime. Chewing sugar-free gum or using sugar-free mints or lozenges can also help stimulate saliva production.

Use a humidifier: Using a humidifier while sleeping can relieve dryness, especially for those who breathe through their mouths or find symptoms worse overnight.

Avoid: Caffeine, alcohol and nicotine can all harm you teeth. It’s also good advice to choose an alcohol-free mouthwash.

Rinse don’t brush after vomiting: If you experience nausea and vomiting, rinse your mouth with water immediately rather than brushing your teeth. This helps neutralise stomach acid and protect your enamel. Wait at least 30 minutes before brushing and make sure you use fluoride toothpaste. Try to avoid acidic foods and drinks like citrus fruits, vinegar-based foods, and fizzy beverages during periods of sickness.

Keep up your brushing routine: Brush twice a day using fluoride toothpaste and floss daily to maintain overall oral health. These habits remain especially important while on medications that may impact your mouth’s natural balance.
