The Dogs Trust and Battersea Dogs and Cats Home state that pancakes are safe for dogs unless they have wheat allergies or certain sensitivities - which could lead to an upset stomach.

They said: "Pancakes should only be served as a treat in small amounts as they are high in both carbohydrates and fat."

If you do cook your dog pancakes this year, they remind owners to adjust the amount of regular dog food you feed your furry friend.

According to kitchen retailer Magnet, preparing your kitchen and whipping up some dog-friendly pancakes is very simple.

This year, you can get your pooch involved in the pancake day feast with a banana based recipe.

Banana pancake ingredients:

  • 1 banana
  • 60g plain flour
  • 1 egg
  • 60 ml unsweetened oat milk

Method:

To start with, whisk or mash all of the ingredients together in a bowl - you can use a blender if it is easier.

Meanwhile, warm up your frying pan on a medium-high heat setting.

You'll then want to ladle around four tablespoons of mixture into the centre of the pan and cook until bubbles start to form - this usually takes 30 seconds to one minute and then flip to cook the other side.

Once cool, you can add dog-friendly toppings to the pancake such as xylitol-free peanut butter, bananas, or blueberries.

However, it is very important to ensure the kitchen is set up and ready for the big day.

Pancakes are likely to cause some grease and steam in your kitchen.

There is also the potential for smoke if something goes wrong.

Magnet suggests checking your kitchen has enough ventilation and that your extractor hood and smoke alarm are working correctly ahead of time.

You should never leave your cooking unattended and keep pets and children away from the hob.

After cooking, you may end up with some leftover batter which doesn't have to be thrown away.

Pancakes can be frozen and enjoyed up to two months after if they are stored correctly.

It is important to cook any remaining mixture and when cooled, freeze the pancakes separately in between parchment/baking paper.

They can then be reheated in the microwave or quickly in the oven.

So if your pooch is a fan of the sweet treats, they will be delighted that the festivities can last for months after the big day.
