Hand grenade found at Dungeness beach prompts bomb squad response

A bomb squad has been scrambled to a beach after a hand grenade was discovered.

The coastguard was called to Dungeness yesterday morning to a report of suspected ordnance.

The bomb squad were called to the scene and disposed of the German grenade.

A Romney Marsh coastguard spokesperson said: “We were tasked yesterday at 8.56am with HM Coastguard Folkestone to a report of possible ordnance on the beach at Dungeness.

“Photos were sent to our local Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit who deemed it to be a German grenade and attended to dispose of it safely on the beach.

“If you do come across something on the beach you are unsure of or suspect could be unexploded ordnance, please do not touch it or move it.

“Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard – we will take immediate steps with the relevant partner authorities to keep people safe and ensure the item in question is disposed of correctly.

“In an emergency on the coast dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.”
