Sand dune grass destroyed by fire in The Parade, near Greatstone Beach

Around a hectare of sand dune grass has been destroyed after a fire in Greatstone.

Four fire engines were called to the blaze near the Greatstone Beach car park in The Parade just after 5pm.

Crews used a combination of main jets, high-pressure hose reel jets and portable water tank sprayers to surround the blaze and put it out.

Nobody was injured and the cause is not yet known.

Eyewitness Glen Haylor said it was 'sickening' to see the landscape destroyed, adding: "Firefighters took about 15 minutes to get there and it wasn't nice at all, everyone was concerned about nearby homes and wildlife.

"I felt utterly useless not being able to help in any way and seeing the stunning landscape disappear in front of me was sickening."

Firefighters say they were assisted by Kent Police

Police officers also attended and helped firefighters provide a cordon while they extinguished a flames.
