Lorry gets stuck in shingle at Dungeness National Nature Reserve on Romney Marsh

A lorry became wedged in shingle for two hours after an attempt at a three point turn went horribly wrong.

The BOC lorry, carrying gas cylinders, got stuck on the Dungeness National Nature Reserve on Romney Marsh yesterday.

The driver was trying to turn the vehicle around when the front wheels and cab got lodged in a ditch.

It was stuck for two hours before a recovery vehicle towed it out.

And it was all hands on deck during the drama, with the security team from the Brave New World film set - currently set up on the reserve - lending a hand to help divert traffic around the lorry.

Owen Leyshon, who manages the estate, said: "The driver thought he could do a three point turn. But ended up getting stuck and partially blocking the road.

"He was stuck for two hours with my work colleague Jake Jones and security from the film set helping small cars squeeze past.

"In the end got the recovery lorry to drive into power station compound through another set of gates and pulled it out from a better angle."

Alan Ruler, 60, was driving past and saw the stuck lorry.

He said: "I was visiting the fish shack and saw the lorry down the ditch.

"The cab was off and there were five guys in high vis jackets.

"I wondered how he had managed it.

"It looked a bit precarious, with the cab off and the gas bottles on the back."

Mr Leyshon says on average one or two lorries get stuck on Dungeness each year.

Earlier this year the team behind a fashion shoot ran into trouble when their van became wedged in the shingle for four hours.
