Police van crash closes Battery Lane outside Pilot Inn, Lydd-on-Sea

A road has been closed after a police van crashed into a telegraph pole outside a pub.

Emergency services remain at the scene outside the Pilot Inn on Romney Marsh after a power line came down in the accident.

Police and and four ambulance vehicles were called to Battery Lane at around 7.30am.

The police vehicle has been severely damaged in the crash after flipping over on its side.

Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported in the incident.

An eyewitness at the pub said: "As far as we can tell, it looks like they misjudged the corner.

"We are out of power at the moment but UK Power Networks are on scene dealing with that as we speak and it should not be too much longer."

The road has been closed outside the Pilot Inn for almost four hours due to overhead power cables being brought down.

Buses are being forced to divert due to the closure, with a Stagecoach spokesperson saying: "Due to a power line in the road at Lydd Pilot our services will be diverting via Kerton Road until the line is cleared.

"Sorry for any inconvenience."

A police spokeswoman said: "At around 7.17am this morning a police vehicle collided with a telegraph pole in Battery Road, Lydd.

"Paramedics attended and the driver was checked over at the scene, but was not injured.

"The vehicle has been recovered but the road is currently closed while work is carried out to restore the power network."

The ambulance service has been contacted for comment.
