A256 Sandwich Bypass closed after sewer pipe burst

A main road on the outskirts of a Kent town has been sealed off following a burst sewer pipe.

Both lanes of the A256 Sandwich Bypass between Monk's Way and Ramsgate Road were closed yesterday afternoon.

Kent County Council's Highways team is warning motorists to expect delays in the area and use alternative routes where possible.

A burst pipe has also forced Military Road in Ramsgate to be shut.

Contractors from Southern Water have been working through the night to repair both leaks, but the company believes the disruption will continue over the weekend.

A spokesman for the firm said: "Traffic management measures will be in place over the weekend and we've had to close the A256 southbound Sandwich Road, in agreement with the highways authority.

"We are also assessing the impact from both bursts and have notified the Environment Agency.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank everyone for their patience."

The damage is thought to have been caused by the recent heavy rainfall on Thursday and Friday.
