Baypoint Club in Sandwich calls in administrators after winding up order

A leisure centre has gone into administration and will now be sold, due to a lack of membership.

Baypoint Club in Sandwich appointed administrators Garry Lock and Ian Cadlock, partners at Quantuma, on Thursday, June 4.

The leisure centre has faced financial difficulties for the last few years and Quantuma came in as a result of a threat of winding up - a court order which forces a company into compulsory liquidation.

The administrators say during the last four years the owner Tony Harrison has made significant investment to the former Pfizer Social Club in Ramsgate Road, but has been unable to make a profit.

Garry Lock, partner at Quantuma said: “Despite a huge amount of investment in the club to update the facilities, membership levels for all aspects of the club have not reached sufficient levels for profitable trading.

"Certain costs have already been restructured enabling the business to continue to trade for the foreseeable future.

“The business and the surrounding area has considerable potential. We are exploring a number of options in order to maximise this potential in order to secure the long term future of the club.”

Baypoint has state of the art gym equipment, four football pitches, hockey pitch, an in-door basketball court, squash courts, a 3G football pitch and a children’s nursery.

It also hosts weddings and a music festival in August.

Last week the Mercury reported the financial figures for 2014 on the Companies House website. This shows the club is more than £1.7 million in debt and has a net worth of minus £936,850.

Speaking last week, Mr Harrison said: “Baypoint is and will remain open.”

Quantuma has confirmed that the leisure centre is still trading and will honour its bookings and events planned over the next few months.

The business is also being marketed for sale and any interested parties should contact roland.cramp@lsh.co.uk.
