Warning after school pupil approached by woman who offered a lift in Woodnesborough Road, Sandwich

Parents have been warned after a woman allegedly approached a school pupil in Sandwich, offering them a lift in their car.

Police are investigating the incident which happened in the morning of Monday, September 21 in Woodnesborough Road.

Sir Roger Manwood's School has emailed parents to inform them of the concerns.

The letter, by school worker David Thomas, said: "Please can I make you aware of a report of a stranger offering lifts to students walking to school.

"Students have been reminded today not to accept lifts from people they do not know and to report any offers of lifts."

Parents were asked to reinforce this message to children.

Advice was also given to parents from nearby Sandwich Technology School after hearing of the incident.

Head teacher Tracey Savage said: “We work closely with Sir Roger Manwood’s School and take all safeguarding concerns seriously.

"It is our sincere hope that this was an isolated incident but felt that it was a sensible precaution to make students and their parents aware and alert just in case.

"We would urge all students, parents and members of the local community to let their local schools and the police know immediately if they encounter any similar such incident.”

A Kent Police spokesman said: "Police were contacted on Tuesday, September 22, and it was reported that, at around 8.15am on the previous morning, a child had been offered a lift by a woman in a car on Woodnesborough Road, Sandwich.

"The child declined the offer and the car drove away.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances."

Sir Roger Manwood's School has been asked to comment further.
