Tom Sherreard wins regional qualifying event for The Open

Kent golfers fought their way through Open Championship Regional Qualifying at The Wildernesse Golf Club on Monday.

Tom Sherreard, from Kings Hill Golf Club, covered the Sevenoaks course in a five-under-par 67 to finish first and was one shot ahead of joint runner-up Steve Tiley (Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club).

Both will be joined in next Tuesday’s Final Qualifying by Anthony Tarchetti, the director of golf at Prince’s Golf Club, who came through a play-off after shooting a two-under-par 70 and also Warren Bennett, from Chestfield, who ended with a round of 70.

But there was disappointment for two other Prince’s professionals, Charlie Wilson and Peter Wilson, who both missed out after shooting level par 72s.

Prince's will be one of the four venues hosting Final Qualifying on Tuesday.

The others are Notts (Hollinwell), St Annes Old Links and The Renaissance Club in East Lothian.

Three places for The Open at Carnoustie between July 19-22 will be available at all the four venues.
