Driver from Sevenoaks caught speeding at 130 mph along the M25 and M11 to get away from police

Dramatic police footage has captured a driver hitting speeds of 130mph on the M25 before crashing into a tree during a high-speed chase.

Lee Twinley, of Manor Road, Sundridge, Sevenoaks, was pursued for 20 minutes by a police helicopter and officers on the carriageway, who struggled to keep up with him.

The 20-year-old, who was also under the influence of alcohol, only came to a stop when he lost control of the Volkswagen Tiago, hit a central reservation, and then crashed into a tree.

He was unconscious when officers pulled him from the wreckage. He was then taken to hospital in Cambridge.

Twinley was later charged with five offences in relation to the incident, which happened shortly after 11pm on March 27.

He admitted dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving without insurance, and failing to provide a specimen for analysis when he appeared in court in April and was given an interim driving ban then.

He returned to Sevenoaks Magistrates’ Court on June 2 to learn his fate.

Vicky McGrady, prosecuting, said officers started pursuing the Tiago on the M25 near Brentwood in Essex. The reason officers decided to pull Twinley over was not revealed.

She added: “The vehicle made away at speeds of 100mph and officers followed for several junctions to the M11 where they attempted to stop him.

“He was seen swerving around other motorists and almost collided with other vehicles, but then, as he reached an offside bend, he crashed. No one else was injured.

“He has six previous convictions, including driving without insurance and the offence (dangerous driving) passes the custody threshold."

She then showed the bench a 17-minute clip of the pursuit, which was captured by officers from the National Police Air Service.

The footage began during the high-speed chase on the M25 in Essex, before Twinley joins the M11 where he continues to drive past the Bishop's Stortford junction on the northbound carriageway.

The vehicle can be seen moving from lane to lane.

After that junction, the motorway lanes reduce from four to two and as officers tried to pass the speeding vehicle, Twinley uses the hard shoulder to evade police.

At several points during the footage, he reaches speeds of 130mph and as he approaches junction 9, he is still travelling at least 120mph.

One of the officers on the police radio can be heard saying he knows he’s not going to get past him.

At junction 10 on the M11, Cambridge Police are tasked with trying to stop the vehicle, but at that point, the helicopter crew can be heard saying they need to refuel and the footage ended.

The crash happened shortly afterwards.

Twinley suffered ligament and cartilage injuries to his knee that he still needs an operation on.

The court heard Twinley was remorseful and had admitted all of the offences at the earliest opportunity.

They also heard he had some mental health issues, including ADHD, but alcohol had played a significant in his actions that night.

They were told he had started drinking more heavily last year and when he is under the influence he can’t control himself. He wants help to quit drinking.

At the time of the offence, he’d had a row with his girlfriend and had been drinking heavily for two days before that night. He claimed his anxiety and depression took over.

However, he now had a four-month-old child and another on the way and wanted to stay away from alcohol for the sake of his young family.

Magistrates said the dangerous driving was the most serious charge and jailed Twinley for 12 months, but suspended the term for 24 months for the offence.

He was also ordered to carry out 300 hours of unpaid work, complete an alcohol treatment programme for nine months and attend 30 rehabilitation sessions.

Twinley received no separate penalty for the no licence and no insurance or failing to stop offences, but his licence will be endorsed.

He was also banned from driving for 30 months for the failing to provide offence and given another three-month suspended sentence for the offence, but that will run concurrently to the other.

Twinley was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £187 and £85 court costs and will pay what he owes at a rate of £20 a month as he’s on benefits.
