Sevenoaks District Council will raise a flag to mark Armed Forces Day

A specially adapted Union Flag will fly over Sevenoaks District Council offices this month to mark the upcoming Armed Forces Day.

The council chairman, Cllr Philip McGarvey, will be hosting the ceremony at the authority's Argyle Road premises.

On the same day hundreds of flags will be hoisted across the country to commemorate the efforts of armed forces both at home and overseas.

Members of the Royal British legion, Westerham Sea Cadets and pupils from St John's primary school will also attend.

The ceremony will begin at 10.15am on Monday, June 22 with the flag being raised at 10.30am.

Local residents are invited to attend.

Armed forces day takes place on Saturday, June 27 and events will be held all over the country to mark it.

Cllr Philip McGarvey, said: “This will be one of two flag raising ceremonies that I will be attending in advance of Armed Forces Day as Chairman – at Swanley then Sevenoaks - and I am honoured that they are for this worthwhile cause.

"The services of our armed forces continue to be invaluable as they spread aid and expert support to countries across the world as well as at home”.

“I am also grateful for the opportunity to remember and reflect upon the historical efforts of the armed forces, especially following the recent 70th anniversary of VE day”.
