The patient was sent home to self-isolate and the minor injuries unit in Hospital Road closed while it was cleaned as a precaution.

The child was not tested for COVID-19 (coronavirus) at the hospital and it is not known at this stage if they have the disease.

There is a system of community swabbing of patients at home to test for the virus being carried out by SECAMB.

A spokeswoman for Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust said: "People who think they may have the virus should follow Public Health England guidance: stay at home and call 111 for advice."

The symptoms of coronavirus are fevers, coughs and breathing difficulties, which can also be symptoms of much more common and less serious ailments.

An NHS spokeswoman said: "Everyone can continue to play their part by taking simple steps to prevent the spread of infection such as washing hands frequently."
