West Kent 8-12s project helping children in Sevenoaks, Swanley, West Kingsdown awarded grant by BBC Children in Need

A Kent project which works to help young people across the county has been given over £50,000 in funding.

The West Kent 8-12s initiative, based in Sevenoaks, aims to provide affordable, local recreational and educational activities for children in the district.

BBC Children in Need has now awarded the organisation a grant of £55,539 over three years.

This money will fund the project's staff, help towards venue hire and team building activities and will also contribute towards the cost of arts, crafts and other materials used in weekly club.

A spokesman for West Kent 8-12s said: "We're really pleased we can continue to run this service for children right here in Sevenoaks.

"We want to raise their aspirations, offer them opportunities to try a range of new activities and experiences, promote good behaviour and help with their confidence."

The scheme has been running for more than 12 years and supports around 140 children each week in Swanley, New Ash Green and West Kingsdown.

Mark Murison, 8-12s project co-ordinator, said: “We are proud of our work, the positive feedback and frequent comments given to us from the children, parents, carers and partners make it worthwhile. This would not be possible without the funding from BBC Children in Need.

"The money makes the project more secure and allows us to continue supporting young people across the district. Without this contribution many of these children would not get the individual support required to improve their confidence, self esteem, life skills and behaviour."
