Croydon man admits botched raid on Nationwide Building Society in Westerham

A Croydon man has admitted carrying out a botched night-time raid on a building society.

Jon Ismajli was arrested at the scene in Westerham yesterday morning after a van had smashed into the front of the Nationwide branch at around 4.50am in an attempt to steal a cash machine.

The 26-year-old, of Fairchildes Avenue in Croydon, was subsequently charged with burglary, attempted theft and driving while over the legal alcohol limit.

Earlier today Ismajli pleaded guilty to the offences when he appeared before Medway Magistrates' Court.

A red van caused a substantial amount of damage to the front of the building society branch in the Market Square.

Mourdi Abdellah, who works at Rendevouz Brasserie a few doors down, said this is not the first time something like this has happened in the town.

"I came in and it was all traffic and suddenly I realised what happened," he said yesterday.

"It's similar to what happened eight years ago in Lloyds bank just around the corner.

"I lived in London for years and I've not seen anything like this there, and here we are in a small quiet village and we have this."

Ismajli has been released on bail ahead of his sentencing at Maidstone Crown Court, which will take place on a date yet to be determined.
