John Bercow effigy going up in flames at Edenbridge Bonfire Night - but not before his head falls off

An effigy of John Bercow will go up in flames on Saturday when one of the county's most popular Bonfire Night celebrations in Edenbridge lights up the night sky.

The Edenbridge Bonfire Society has been poking fun at celebrities for more than 20 years and this morning members announced this year's effigy would be an 11 metre version of Mr Bercow.

He has been Speaker of the House of Commons since 2009, and will be torched on Saturday night during the society's annual bonfire and firework celebrations, alongside another effigy of Guy Fawkes.

He recently announced he would stand down from the post and left the house on Thursday.

Parliament is dissolved next week before the General Election in December.

After the effigy, which sees Mr Burcow holding Jeremy Corbyn and Boris Johnson's heads, was revealed, disaster stuck when its head broke off.

Members of the society quickly began work to get him fixed in time for the celebrations on Saturday.

Past targets have been a real mixture of public figures and celebrities.

These including Boris Johnson, Harvey Weistein, Donald Trump, Katie Hopkins, Russell Brand, Jonathan Ross, both of the Blairs, Katie Price, Wayne Rooney, Lance Armstrong, Anne Robinson, Sepp Blatter and even Sadam Hussein.

Hundreds of people go along to the celebrations to see the giant guy set on fire.

The society which last year celebrated its 90th anniversary, aims to use the bonfire night celebrations to raise more than £5,000 for Kent charities.

The giant effigy will be lit after a torch-lit parade through the High Street.

Organised by a team of local volunteers, the evening begins at 6.30pm which is led by the Bishop of the Bonfire, his choirboys and the society’s effigies.

The bishop will be joined in the procession by teams from visiting Sussex bonfire societies, each wearing their own colourful outfits, along with a dozen or so brightly lit carnival floats, costumed walking parties and marching bands.

Mr Bercow's effigy will be burnt on the town's recreation ground with alongside the firework display.
