Overnight closures on A21 at Coopers Corner on Kent border near Hawkhurst

Safety works are being completed on a major route which has suffered from a “significant level of collisions”.

The A21, which connects Kent, East Sussex and London, is being widened, having traffic islands installed, and signage is being improved in a National Highways scheme.

The latest chunk of improvements started on October 6.

There are currently temporary lights in place at Ashdene Garages in Hurst Green, which are expected to stay until the first week of November.

There will then be nine overnight closures between Flimwell and Coopers Corner on the Kent border for resurfacing.

When the road is closed overnight, a diversion route will be in place using the A268 and A229.

This work is scheduled to end on November 29.

The recent closures are part of a larger scheme to improve journeys along the major route.

Overnight closures were also put in place on the road in June and July.

A National Highways spokesperson said: “These are critical safety improvements on this busy stretch, which has a high incident rate.

“The A21 has, for many years, suffered from a significant level of collisions.

“We are bringing forward a series of schemes to improve safety along this corridor, which will include, amongst others, junction improvements, improvements to road visibility, changes to speed limits, improved signing, markings and road studs.”
