The incidents have reportedly been happening since February, with the latest taking place this week.

A police spokesman said: “On Tuesday, the suspect is alleged to have attempted to leave the store without paying for several bottles of alcohol and was challenged by staff, two of whom were punched and headbutted.”

Ewens, of Oak View, was arrested at the scene and later charged with five counts of theft, and two counts of assault.

It is reported during these months other items, including meat products and alcohol, have been stolen by the same suspect from Waitrose.

Ewens was remanded in custody and was due before Medway Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
