It was built for some of the top-ranking naval officers stationed on the Island at the beginning of the 19th century.

In 2010, in a project spearheaded by Will Palin - son of Monty Python’s Michael Palin - the Spitalfields Historic Buildings Trust bought the entire site.

This also included the rescue and repair of Sheerness Dockyard Church, which suffered a fire in 2001 and has now been transformed into a business hub for young people.

The dockyard opened in 1660 and operated for 300 years before closing in 1960.

Each of the five houses along the terrace was provided for those in the principal officer class, such as the Chief Engineer and Commander of the Dockyard.

This property was specifically allocated to the Senior Medical Officer.

The double-fronted building was first put up for sale in December 2023, with a price tag of £950,000.

On Monday, March 17, it was relisted by estate agency Inigo for £800,000 – a drop of £150,000.

It currently belongs to Sara Sugarman, a Welsh actress, scriptwriter and director.

She is best known for films Sid and Nancy (1986), Very Annie Mary (2001), Disney’s Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen (2004) and Vinyl (2012).

In an interview with Inigo, Miss Sugarman said: “I have been at the dockyard for nine years, one of which was a full year of restoration.

“I completed the renovation Will Palin began; he restored the cornices and painted one of the sitting rooms that rich yellow.

“It was in fact Will who introduced me to Dockyard Terrace. He didn’t want to sell it – and I didn’t really want to buy it!

“In the end, we both lost; the house got its way – it kept drawing me in.”

Set in the Blue Town conservation area and within a private residential site, the home is both gated and managed by 24-hour security.

Over four floors there are seven bedrooms, five bathrooms, two sitting rooms, two dining rooms, a kitchen and a bar.

It covers 4,500 sq ft inside and has a 220 ft garden to the rear.

During the renovations, Miss Sugarman has made sure to keep the building’s eccentricities.

The walls and woodwork have been painted in historically accurate colours, with the traditional practices of lime rendering and wax polish used to restore architectural features.

“When I got here, the kitchen was in what is now the green room,” she said. “It was horrible.

“I decided instead to have my kitchen in the basement, at that point derelict, which is where it would have originally been.

“It has a simple design, with open shelving for pots and pans, and two enormous wicker baskets full of tablecloths and tea towels.

“All the plates and crockery are simply stacked on white side tables in the dining room leading off from the kitchen, which still has its original flagstones.

“The green room has had its original function as a reception room reinstated; I once had 20 people for dinner in there! Though mainly it’s for flopping around in.”

She added: “I still remember I bought 52 brass door handles to redo this house.

“And most, if not all, the furniture and paintings have come from auction, chosen to fit the late Georgian period.

“Among them are some treasures; an enormous four-poster bed I found at a sale in Derbyshire, an oil painting of a sailing ship, portraits, gilt mirrors, corner cupboards, faded Persian rugs, Indian textiles, stellar pendant lights…the wonderful bar – upon which Lady Gaga once danced – and library came from the Lanesborough Hotel on Hyde Park Corner.

“I call the bar ‘the doctor’s tavern’ in honour of my Georgian predecessor – hence the plaque on the mantelpiece opposite.”

The 62-year-old explained that she doesn’t live at the property full-time but instead it is a “respite” where she can write her scripts and still be an hour from London’s East End.

Despite not living on the Island, Miss Sugarman praised the area for its “great sense of community”.
