AFC Sheppey missed out on their chance of promotion to the Vandanel Kent County League Premier Division, losing the Division 1 play-off final 3-0 at West runners-up Sutton Athletic on Saturday.

Sheppey, who finished 11 points behind champions Canterbury City in Division 1 East, were chasing the game after conceding twice early on.

Athletic took the lead within 10 minutes when Ben Millbank’s cross found Luke Newman at the back post who headed home.

Minutes later Gary Wisdom made it 2-0 when Millbank played him through from the left and he calmly finished when one-on-one with the AFC Sheppey goalkeeper.

Michael Mills put the game out of Sheppey’s reach when he converted a powerful header from Newman’s cross from the right.

Sutton had a number of other chances to add to their tally, but the score remained at 3-0 which meant the Dartford-based side secured promotion to the top tier of the league.
