London murder suspect arrested in Sheerness

Stunned shoppers watched as armed police swooped on a town centre as part of a murder inquiry.

A man in his 30s was arrested in Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey by officers investigating the death of Imani Allaway-Muir who was gunned down 50 miles away in London.

The Sheppey arrest yesterday was the fourth in connection with the crime.

A fifth man, in his 20s, was later arrested this morning in Islington.

Both men are still in custody.

A police spokesman said: "Officers, including firearms officers, arrested a man in Sheerness High Street at around 4pm on Tuesday on behalf of the Metropolitan Police."

It is believed the arrest was in the Hope Street area.

A Met spokesman said: "Detectives investigating a murder in Islington have made two further arrests. A fourth man has been arrested by officers investigating the murder of Imani Allaway-Muir. The man, aged in his 30s, was arrested in Sheerness.

"A fifth man in his 20s was arrested at an address in Islington this morning."

Mr Allaway-Muir died of gunshot wounds on Saturday, July 4.

The Met spokesman said: "Police were called at 3.20pm to Roman Way, London N7, following reports of shots fired.

"Officers attended with paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and found Imani, who was aged 22, suffering from gunshot injuries."

"Officers, including firearms officers, arrested a man in Sheerness High Street."

A post-mortem examination gave cause of death as a gunshot wound.

Two men were arrested on Tuesday, July 7, and have been charged in connection with the death.

Nathaniel Reece, 39, of Southgate Road, London, was charged with murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

Matthew Hardy, 34, of Six Acres Estate, London, was charged with murder.

They appeared at Highbury Corner magistrates' court and will next appear at the Old Bailey on September 28.

Another man who was also arrested on suspicion of murder has been released while investigations continue.
