Boy injured in crash in Chequers Road, Minster, Sheppey

A young boy was taken to hospital today after being hit by a car.

The collision happened in Chequers Road, Minster, Sheppey, near St George's CE Primary School around 12.30pm.

A police spokesman said: "We were called at 12.38pm to a collision involving a car and a child in Chequers Road, Minster-on-Sea.

"Officers and the South East Coast Ambulance Service attended and the child was treated for a leg injury before being taken to hospital for further medical attention. His parent is aware."

A spokesman for SECAmb said: "We attended a road traffic crash at this location today following a call at approximately 12.20pm that a person had been hit by a vehicle.

"The patient was assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to Medway Maritime Hospital for further checks and treatment."

Witnesses said they believed the boy had been riding a scooter at the time.

Minster parish council has campaigned for a speed camera along that stretch of road but was turned down by Kent and Medway Safety Camera Partnership in January last year.

Hayley Dawson, the camera partnership's project and communications officer, said safety cameras were used only where there was evidence of excess speed and a history of speed-related fatal or serious injury crashes.

She said there had been no reported serious injuries in the three years from October 1, 2014 to September 30, 2017 and so it did not meet the "minimum intervention criteria.”

She added: "I have looked at the data for slight injury crashes on that section of road and found no evidence of excess speed as a causation factor. Driver inattention and close-following appear to be the theme."

Resident Bob Back handed in a petition of 189 names calling for a safety camera.

During last summer, the village's Community Speedwatch volunteers recorded 55 drivers in an hour breaking the 30mph limit.
