A249 Sheppey Crossing to close overnight at weekend for bridge works

A busy route used by thousands of drivers daily is closing for repair work.

The upcoming overnight closures are to allow National Highways to carry out “structure bridge works”, including drainage.

The crossing will be shut at 8pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 13 to 15, reopening at 6am the following morning – and remaining open during the day.

Motorists will likely face longer journeys as they will be diverted via the Kingsferry Bridge. It will be the only way on and off the Island during this period.

A National Highways spokesman added: “We will be closing the Sheppey Crossing to inspect and assess the work required to replace a bridge joint later this year.

“We are carrying out the work overnight, when we know traffic flows are lowest, to minimise any disruption.”

On Friday (June 6), the Kingsferry Bridge was temporarily shut to traffic after being hit by a boat.

Buses replaced trains along the route until engineers examined and deemed it safe.

The crossing was last closed back in April, when a section of the bridge was shut for resurfacing work, along with the A249 Sheppey-bound.

Villagers in Iwade told KentOnline they were “waiting for an accident to happen” and accused drivers of ignoring a temporary one-way system during the closure.
