Maidstone-bound A249 delays following car fire near Sheppey Way and Grovehurst Road

A car fire caused long delays on a busy road this afternoon

The A249 Maidstone-bound carriage way was partially blocked between Sheppey Way, the Lower Halstow turn off, and Grovehurst Road, near the Iwade and Kemsley turn off.

An hour ago a witness said on Facebook: "A car on fire is causing big delays for those leaving the Island.

"Both the old bridge and big bridge will be backed up. Leave early to avoid delays.

"All three emergency services are present. I hope the occupants are okay."

Jessica Rachel called 999 after seeing the incident at around 2pm.

She said: "The traffic was back up for half hour.

"I saw the tyre blow up, it was mad."

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue said: "Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a vehicle on fire that was being towed by a campervan on the A249 in Bobbing.

"Two fire engines attended and crews wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the flames using hose reel jets. Kent Police were also in attendance."
