Two-car crash closes Sheppey Crossing bridge

A Kent bridge was partially shut following a two-car crash

The A249 Sheppey Crossing was closed northbound following the accident at 5.15pm.

Drivers were warned of queues back to the Iwade area due to the collision, between the B2231 Sheppey Way (Lower Halstow) and A2500 (Leysdown).

Motorists spoke of seeing police and firefighters at the scene, as well as stranded vehicles.

A diversion was in place via the Kingsferry Bridge.

A spokeman for Kent Police said: "Officers were called to a report of a two-vehicle collision on the A249 Sheppey Crossing shortly after 5.15pm on Saturday, February 4.

"Emergency services are at the scene and the northbound carriageway of the bridge is closed while the incident is responded to.

"Drivers are advised to use Sheppey Way when travelling onto the Isle."

The Crossing has reopened at 7.22pm and traffic has returned to normal.
