Travel delays on A249 due to van fire

Part of the A249 had to be shut this morning due to a van fire.

The Maidstone-bound carriageway was closed shortly before the turn-off for Iwade, Kemsley and Grovehurst Road, Sittingbourne, because of the blaze.

Traffic was queuing back to the Sheppey Crossing, but it is understood the road was reopened just before 10am.

Police were called to the van fire, on the slip road, at about 9.10am.

A spokesman said: "Officers and Kent Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene where the slip road was closed while the fire was extinguished.

"Arrangements were made to recover the vehicle and the slip road has now been reopened."

Two fire engines were sent to tackle the blaze shortly after 9am.

A fire service spokesman said: "Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a tipper van alight on a slip road off the A249 for Iwade, Sittingboune.

"Two fire engines were sent to the Maidstone-bound carriageway and crews wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the flames using hose reel jet and foam."

He added: "No casualties were reported. It’s believed the fire started accidentally and the cause is not yet known."

Crews returned to station at 9.40am.
