Smoke still billowing at barn fire in Leysdown Road in Eastchurch, Sheppey

Residents are still being warned to keep their windows and doors closed 18 hours after a barn fire first started.

Eight fire engines and a bulk water carrier were first used to battle a blaze at a barn in Leysdown Road in Eastchurch, on Sheppey at noon yesterday.

At 6.30pm tonight one fire engine was still at the scene and residents were being advised to be wary of the smoke.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “Crews are making good progress in extinguishing a barn on fire and only one fire engine remains in attendance but there is still a large amount of smoke in the area.”
