Prisoner who used improvised weapon to seriously injure inmate at HMP Swaleside on Sheppey given extra jail time

A prisoner who used an improvised weapon to seriously injure an inmate has been sentenced to an extra five years and three months in jail.

Craig Braham left the victim with numerous deep wounds, inflicted by the sharpened edge of a hair clipper, after the pair became involved in a dispute at HMP Swaleside in Eastchurch, Sheppey.

The 37-year-old pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent, and possessing an offensive weapon in prison, and was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on Monday.

Braham was already serving an eight year sentence, imposed in September 2017, for a serious assault committed in Birmingham. The new sentence will be served consecutively.

At about 2.20pm on July 29 2019, Braham and the victim became involved in a verbal altercation inside a room on the wing where they were residing.

During the altercation, the offender removed an improvised weapon from his sleeve and repeatedly struck the victim.

Three prison officers quickly intervened and, during a subsequent struggle, Braham threw the weapon, a five pointed hair clipper head attached to the end of a handle, into a nearby kitchen.

The victim suffered several deep cuts to the side of his head, in addition to a single stab wound to his arm, which required hospital treatment.

He declined to support a prosecution, but CCTV from the prison clearly captured the assault in full.

DC Karen Hearn, Kent Police’s investigating officer for the case, said: "There can be little doubt that Braham is an exceptionally dangerous man who has a propensity for serious violence.

"He used a crude but very sharp weapon to inflict deep wounds which required extensive medical treatment. It is only down to good fortune that the victim did not sustain life changing injuries.

"Despite already being subjected to a considerable custodial sentence, he has shown no willingness to change his ways.

"He is a clear and obvious danger to the public and I am pleased that our investigation means he will spend significantly longer in prison."
