Coronavirus Kent: Self-isolating Sheerness driver unable to appear in court over fatal Age UK minibus crash

A 35-year-old Sheerness woman is expected to admit that her careless driving killed a woman in a crash with an Age UK vehicle.

Rebecca Hickey, of Alma Road, was due to enter her plea at Maidstone Crown Court to the charge of causing the death of Eileen Murray.

Hickey was driving a black Peugeot 307 when it collided with a minibus in Marine Parade, Sheerness, just before 10am on Wednesday, January 16, 2019.

But Maidstone Crown Court heard that Hickley couldn't make it to court after taking preventative measures brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

Her barrister, Stella Harris, who was linked to the court via a mobile, told Judge Adele Williams that following an expert's report Hickey has told her she plans to plead guilty.

She told the court: "It is her intention to plead guilty but she is self-isolating at this time because of her children."

Judge Williams adjourned the hearing until July 17 and ordered a probation report after revealing three others were also hurt and another passenger later died - but a pathologist ruled it was not linked to the accident.

The bus had been carrying four elderly women on their way to the Sheppey Age UK day centre in Trinity Road for lunch. All had to be treated in hospital.

Eileen ‘Pat’ Murray, 77, from The Maples in The Broadway, Minster, later died from her injuries in the crash and both vehicles were written off.

Hickey was granted unconditional bail until the next hearing in July.
