Sheppey dog owner warns others of danger of discarded fish hooks on the beach

A dog owner has warned others to be vigilant after a discarded fish hook became stuck in the mouth of her pet.

Dionne Grant, 29, from Minster, Sheppey, was walking her three dogs along the seafront when she noticed her 10-year-old springer spaniel Aspro was dragging something.

She said: “I quickly stopped her and found she had a fishing hook stuck in her mouth and another hook and weight dragging along behind her.

“I couldn’t get the hook out. I was in a real panic. There was not another person in sight so I called family friend Dave Kennedy who came to help as he was nearby.

“It took him a good half an hour to get the hook out of her mouth. We were very lucky. It was a very scary experience.”

After the ordeal last Sunday (February 21) Aspro was given anti-inflammatory medication.

Dionne said: “Luckily she is fine now and just has a small hole where the hook was.”

She is now appealing for anglers to be more careful and is warning other dog owners to beware of the dangers.

She also suggests signs should be on the beach pointing out the area is used by anglers.

She said: “Please be careful. All fishermen and women please take your hooks home. This could have been a lot worse. I understand some tackle washes up but we found two in less than a week.

“It’s such a shame as we walk our dogs there two to three times a day. Now I’m too scared to take them to the beautiful beach that’s on our doorstep.

“I’ll just take them one at a time now so I can keep a very close eye on them.”
