Closure order served on property in Clyde Street, Sheerness, after anti-social behaviour complaints

A property which had become a hub for anti-social behaviour, drug misuse and violent crime has been shut down by police.

Officers working with a housing association say they received multiple complaints from residents about an address in Clyde Street, Sheerness.

Now the place has been boarded up for three months while the landlord clears the place and finds new tenants.

Insp Julia Bassindale said: “This enforcement has been possible thanks to residents raising their concerns with their local constable.

“Those who have a detrimental impact on the quality of life for communities have to realise there are consequences to this behaviour.”

The order is a result of months of work and evidence gathering by the Swale Community Safety Unit, led by PC Jamie Spencer who is the Anti-Social Behaviour officer for Swale.

Police initially warned the occupants about their bad behaviour. When it continued, officers went to Medway Magistrates' Court on Thursday, February 6 and applied for a closure order.

This was authorised and will last for three months.

The premises have now been secured and a warning placed on the door.

Any unauthorised person who gains access to the property during this time risks a fine and a prison sentence.

It means the housing provider will be able to clear the property and eventually house new tenants.

Insp Bassindale added: “We are determined to tackle the problem when it arises and will work with council colleagues and other housing providers to respond effectively.

“I would urge any other residents who are suffering similar issues to contact us so that we can work promptly to resolve any concerns.”
