Increased police presence in Leysdown and Shellness amid rumours of 'planned gathering'

There has been an increased police presence on two of Kent's beaches amid rumours of a large gathering.

Kent Police UK has tweeted a series of posts about officers being on patrol in Leysdown and Shellness, on Sheppey, this afternoon.

Shortly after 12.30pm, the force said: "If you’re in Leysdown and Shellness today, you may see an increased presence from our officers.

"The beaches are busy and officers are on patrol."

An hour later, it added: "Leysdown and Shellness beaches are busy – lots of people enjoying the weather in a safe and responsible way.

"In addition to sun lotion and staying hydrated, please remember social distancing."

Then, shortly after 3pm, another post read: "We’ve spent the afternoon engaging with people visiting the beach in Leysdown. Please remember to socially distance and stay safe."

The tweets come as rumours on social media suggested a second 'beach party' was headed for Leysdown.

Cllr Cameron Beart, who represents Queenborough and Halfway on Swale council, was also notified about the gathering and asked why it wasn't possible to "nip it in the bud" before it had the chance to start.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police is aware of a potential planned gathering which may take place at an undisclosed location in the south east on 12 August 2020.

"Officers have liaised with the event organiser who has been reminded of their responsibilities to adhere to social distancing guidelines and to any community the event may take place in.

"Kent Police continues to monitor the situation and will respond appropriately."

In June, two people were rushed to hospital after being stabbed at a beach rave in Leysdown.

Then, on Sunday night, another huge beach party saw hundreds of people descend on Greatstone, near New Romney.
