A lorry has overturned on a roundabout on the Isle of Sheppey this afternoon, blocking a section of the A249.

Kent Police were called to the Maidstone-bound carriageway at Cowstead Corner at about 1.50pm.

The road is closed and traffic is being diverted over the old Kingsferry Bridge.

Kent Highways is also on the scene following reports of a fuel leak.

The lorry is not thought to have shed its load and the male driver was not badly hurt.

South East Coast Ambulance Service said the man was suffering from shock and taken to hospital as a precaution.

An officer at the scene said it could be several hours before the vehicle is recovered.

Witness Stuart Somers said: "It's at exactly the same spot as other accidents that have happened.

"It appears the driver has gone round the corner too fast and has toppled over.

"It's about time Kent Highways did something about this."
