Armed response after man seen 'brandishing large knife' in Broadway Sheerness

Police have made an arrest in Sheerness after reports of a man armed with a weapon.

It was suggested a man was walking around the town with what witnesses said was 'a large knife'.

Several people posted on social media to say there were lots of officers in the Broadway and Marine Parade areas of Sheerness while the police helicopter was hovering above.

It is understood the incident was near Sheppey Leisure Complex and people were told to stay inside the buildings while police dealt with the situation.

One woman who didn't want to be named said: "He was outside the gym not long ago."

One man also posted to say: "Please be safe every one. He’s carrying a knife."

A police spokesman said: "Police were called at 7.40pm to reports of a man possibly seen with a knife in Broadway, Sheerness.

"Officers attended and following a search located a suspect.

"He has been arrested and taken into custody."
