Sheppey coach Peter Olliver has revealed the secret of his side’s quick return to form within the space of seven days was changing their training routines.

The Islanders responded from the 51-14 drubbing at high-flying Ashford with a 48-point trouncing of Whitstable in Kent 1 on Saturday.

Coach Olliver revealed it was all down to a bonding session at training on Tuesday.

He said the key to the 53-5 win was "getting the team spirit right" and revealed he had done that by giving the players the night off the rugby field, though not out of action altogether.

He said: "We had a 20-minute chat on Tuesday about the defeat and a few were down in the dumps but everyone was pretty honest about what they felt we needed to do.

"Then we went out and did some good bonding. We didn’t even play rugby.

"We tried American Football and some Aussie Rules, it was a bit different but such a good laugh and then we had a good rugby session on Thursday.

"We saw what a difference it made on Saturday because the team spirit was there for all to see."

He added: "That is the standard now that we have to live up to.

"There were still a few points to work on but I don’t want to put the dampeners on it."

Olliver said his side faced another difficult Kent 1 trip to Beccehamian on Saturday but it is one they want to win if they are to climb up the league table.

He said: "Beccehamian are always there or thereabouts and have a couple of old heads.

"It is a difficult league this year. Lots of teams have been recruiting but we want to finish in the top four and build toward next season."
