Meet Winnie - the pampered pig who thinks he is a dog.

Much like the popular children's book character Babe, he is a little confused about which species he belongs to.

The 10-month-old pet barks, sits and plays with other pooches on the Isle of Sheppey.

He sleeps in his owners' bed and has even been known to skateboard.

Since he was a piglet, Winnie has grown up around dogs.

He often goes for walks near his home in Queenborough Road, Halfway, with his best friend Alfie - a 10-year-old Rottweiler and bullmastiff cross - and their owner Jo Edwards.

The 37-year-old is the joint owner of Glamour Paws, a pet salon in Minster Road, Halfway, where she also works as a groomer.

Winnie - or Winston, to give him his full name - can often be found behind the counter at the business, which opened in October 2011.

Mrs Edwards said: "Obviously being in the salon I don't think he realises he is a pig.

"He absolutely adores Alfie. When he walks ahead of him, he barks, or when Alfie starts barking he copies him."

For his last Christmas present, Winnie was given a specially adapted skateboard.

It has a small container for food on one end so he ends up zooming along when he goes to get something to eat.

He has slightly outgrown the toy now, but still has a go from time to time.

Mrs Edwards added he is clean and does not smell - despite what most people think about the animals.

Before she could look after Winnie, who is mainly a miniature potbelly with some traces of the breed kunekune, she needed to become a registered pig keeper.

She also had to apply for a special licence to walk him outside.

Mrs Edwards and her groundworker husband Lee Hutchison, 40, bought Winnie after the death of a pet dog.

She said: "I always wanted a pig. He definitely brightens the house up because he's got so much character.

"They're really easy to look after. Winnie eats pig pellets, fruits and vegetables, but he does dig up half the garden."
