Police spokesman Andy Saunders commented this morning: "We were called at 6.50pm to a report a van had collided with a tree in Leysdown Road, Sheppey, near the junction with Harty Ferry Road.

"Officers attended along with ambulance and fire crews and a man and a woman were taken to hospital. Neither are believed to have suffered serious injury."

The ambulance service confirmed the man was suffering back pain and the woman abdominal pain. Both were taken to Medway Hospital for further treatment.

Meanwhile the Sheppey Crossing was shut going on to the island due to an overturned car between Sheppey Way and the A2500.

Police were called at 9pm after the vehicle collided with the central reservation.

The road was briefly closed in both directions because of debris.

A man in his 40s, from Sheerness, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and remains in custody. The road was reopened at around 11pm.
