Should Sheppey's holiday parks be open all year?

Owners of holiday sites in Warden, Eastchurch and Leysdown on the Isle of Sheppey have been sent letters from Swale council asking what they think of a 12-month licence.

At the moment, the longest time the parks can remain open is 10 months. For the other two months, all owners of the 6,500 caravans or chalets must find somewhere else to live.

To ensure they have a second property, they must hand over their home postcode to park bosses.

Some owners have been asking for all-year permission so they can have the same perks as residential retirement parks in Sittingbourne and Faversham.

But Pat Sandle, chairman of Warden parish council, said: "We are really disturbed about this. For a start, the eastern end of the Island does not have the infrastructure to support this.

"If people start using these sites as their permanent homes then we will need more school places and doctors. Swale already has the highest number of patients to GPs in Britain.

"There is also only one road serving this part of the Island. If anything happens to it, we are blocked off. The bus service is also inadequate."

She said she has the support of both Eastchurch and Leysdown parish councils.

She added: "These letters came completely out of the blue. No one has so far asked the parish councils hat we think."

Some park bosses have said they prefer to only open eight months a year to give staff time to rest after the summer season.

Cllr Sandle said: "If Swale council wants to promote tourism on Sheppey, this is not the way to do it."

A Swale council spokesman said: “As part of the local plan review we are gathering information to help inform any future policy in the area.

"It’s important we get a wide range of stakeholders and this is part of that exercise.”

Cllr Mike Baldock, deputy leader and cabinet member for planning at Swale council, has agreed to meet parish councillors as part of the consultation.
