Smoke billows into sky as firefighters tackle field fire in Warden, Sheppey

Firefighters are tackling a blaze on Sheppey that has sent huge plumes of smoke billowing into the sky.

Fire crews were called to reports of a field fire near Warden Bay Road, Warden, shortly after 11.20am.

The blaze is in a field of about 1,000 square metres of standing and cut corn.

Plumes of smoke can be seen from Leysdown and Bay View – over a mile away.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Crews are dealing with a fire in a field of around 1,000 square metres of standing and cut corn, near Warden Bay Road.

"Four fire engines were initially in attendance.

"Firefighters are using breathing apparatus to tackle the fire."

Shortly after 12.15pm, the spokesman added: "Crews are working with the owner of the land to create fire breaks and the incident has been stood down to two engines."

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
