Lewis Frostick made a dream debut for Sheerness East on Saturday as he saved two penalties to help his club to victory in the Kent Intermediate Challenge Shield.

The 16-year-old pulled off the heroics in a penalty shoot-out in his first senior outing.

Frostick, from Eastchurch, replaced regular keeper Richard Higgin after 25 minutes against Tudor Sports.

Higgin was forced to leave the field through injury and that left East manager Dave Down with no option but to pitch Frostick into what was a heated cup tie.

Down said: "It was a big game and a physical one. Someone of that age could have easily been intimidated.

"He’s done superbly well. The lad came on and rose to the occasion. He didn’t look out of place at all and made some good saves."

East were playing extra-time for the second successive game, after beating Kennington last week in the Les Leckie Cup and they were forced into playing another additional half-hour when Saturday’s game remained goalless after 90 minutes.

Graham Andrews scored early on for East in extra-time and Frostick had to pull off a fine save to keep them in the lead.

Frostick was beaten in the second half as a scuffed shot wrong footed him. With the tie ending 1-1 it went to penalties, where the youngster saved twice to help East to a 4-1 shoot-out victory.

Down added: "You couldn’t ask for a better debut. He’s a competent lad and had no problems with putting him in.

"He’s a good goalkeeper and he can only get better. It was a real plus and a real positive and everyone in the club is delighted with him.

"We’ve introduced a few youngsters this season when possible. Last weekend it was Lewis who shone and this week it could be someone else."

Higgin, who suffered a deadleg in the match, is expected to resume goalkeeping responsibilities this weekend.

East travel to Bromley Green for a Vandanel Kent County League, Division 1 East fixture.
