Sheppey farmer's barn goes up in flames

A barn has been destroyed by fire in a suspected arson attack.

The blaze, which is believed to have been started deliberately, broke out just before 8pm on Friday on the Thistle Hill estate at Minster, Sheppey.

Neighbours could see flames from the building in Scocles Road.

A witness, who did not want to be named, wrote on Facebook: "Once again, kids have set the barns alight in Scocles road."

It was the second time this year one of the farm's barns have caught fire.

At the height of the blaze at 9pm Kent Fire and Rescue Service warned neighbours to keep doors and windows closed.

It wrote on Twitter: "Residents in the Thistle Hill area of Minster-on-Sea are asked to keep windows and doors closed as a precaution due to a large barn fire nearby in Scocles Road."

Police said they were notified at 7.51pm but a spokesman added: "The matter was dealt with by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. No police attendance was necessary."
