POLICE are preparing for the closure of the only bridge which links the Isle of Sheppey with mainland Kent.

On Friday, January 27, the Kingsferry Bridge will be closed for routine maintenance work between midnight and 4.30am.

PC Warren Jarvis, who has been organising the contingency plan on behalf of the police said: "We have a number of plans in place to ensure that the island remains effectively policed whilst the bridge is lifted.

"This includes the use of extra patrols, including a dog unit, being stationed on the island, along with other emergency services.

"Boats will also be on standby should any person need to be taken to the mainland as a result of an emergency.

“The bridge will not be open to vehicles, trains or pedestrians so there is no way people will be able to get on or off the Island whilst the bridge is raised.

"I would like to remind people to plan their journey ahead to prevent them being caught out.”
