A crash involving two vehicles - one of which was a police car - resulted in two Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) being taken to hospital.

The collision, involving a silver Jaguar X-Type and a marked police car, happened in The Broadway in Minster, Sheppey, close to the junction with Clovelly Drive.

The Jaguar was travelling towards The Leas and the police car was heading in the opposite direction when the crash happened at about 6.05pm on Saturday.

A 30-year-old man, from Sheerness, was later arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision. He has been released, pending further inquiries.

A police spokesman said: "No serious injuries were reported, but two PCSOs were taken to a local hospital as a precaution.

"Officers are investigating the circumstances and any witnesses who are yet to speak with Kent Police are urged to get in contact.

"Motorists who were travelling in the area and have dash camera footage of the incident, or either of the vehicles being driven, are also asked to get in touch."

The appeal comes as a resident has started a petition to get the limit dropped from 40mph to 30mph along The Broadway.

Chris Cox, who has lived in the road with his wife and children for about three-and-a-half years, said: “I've started this petition because it really is a matter of time before someone is killed on this road and then it will be too late as someone would have lost a loved one.

“Since we’ve lived here, we’ve seen quite a lot of accidents. Last year a car went through the bus stop by the Abbey Hotel, there’s been a car crash into the public toilets by The Whitehouse Restaurant, we’ve had a car on its roof at the Scrapsgate junction - there’s just a few off the top of my head.

“Then, on Saturday night, there was an almighty crash and our house shook - we went outside, slightly expecting to find someone in our front garden, thankfully there wasn’t, but there had been a head-on collision on the crest of the hill between a police car and a Jaguar.

“It happened at about 6pm - if it was the summer there’d have been a lot of pedestrians along that road and they could have been hurt.”

Mr Cox, operations director at Sittingbourne’s IAC Delivery Solutions, added: “It’s a built-up area, there are over 100 properties along The Broadway, about five bus stops and a parade of shops within the 40mph limit, with parking out the front, there’s also a lot of horse riders, bicycles and schoolchildren who use The Broadway - there’s just no need for it to be 40mph.

“If people were travelling at 30mph, collisions would be avoidable or less severe. The survival rates are much higher if there’s a collision at 30mph instead of 40mph. If we reduce the speed limit, we reduce the risk."

Mr Cox has been invited to present the petition to Swale council’s Joint Transportation Board in December. So far, it has more than 280 signatures.

The 40-year-old said he and other residents were working to make surrounding roads, including Scrapsgate Road and Wards Hill Road, safer too.
