Sheppey Coastguard Team called rescue woman from sea near Sheerness

A woman was rescued from the sea off Sheerness in the early hours of this morning.

The Sheppey Coastguard Team was alerted at 1.32am.

The Sheerness inshore lifeboat was also launched and police were called.

A police spokesman said: "We were called to concerns for the welfare of a woman who had gone into the sea off Marine Parade, Sheerness, at around 1.20am.

"Officers attended alongside the Coastguard and the South East Coast Ambulance Service. The woman was brought to safety and handed into the care of healthcare professionals."

A Coastguard spokesman said: "The Sheppey team quickly found the casualty and got them out of the water and took care or them until the ambulance arrived."

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: "We were called 2.03am this morning to the beach at Sheerness to a patient who had been recovered from the sea by the Coastguard.

"An ambulance crew attended and the patient, an adult female, was treated at the scene before being taken to Medway Hospital."

Coastguards stood down at 4am. It was the third call of its kind in five days.

Sheppey coastguards were also called to an injured person on Sheerness beach at 6.10am on New Year's Eve (Tuesday).

A spokesman said: "The casualty was found and given first aid until the the ambulance arrived."

The team stood down after two hours.

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman said there were reports of an injured woman who was assessed and treated before being taken to Medway Maritime Hospital.

At 30 minutes after midnight on December 30 the team was called to save a person in the water off Sheerness.

A spokesman said: "The casualty was quickly found and removed from the water. First aid was given and the casualty was handed over to the ambulance service."

Sheerness lifeboat had been launched but was stood down on its way.

Coastguards were stood down at 2am.
