Kevin Hake managed to turn a selection crisis into an opportunity last week.

Twenty one of Sheppey United’s players were unavailable at the weekend which led Hake to get on the phone and bring in four new recruits.

Keelan Mooney was one of them - joining from Ashford United - while winger Majid Kinga has also signed on for the Kent Invicta League side.

“We had people dropping like flies last week and we were determined that we weren’t going to call any games off," said Hake.

“We made some frantic phone calls and made the extra effort and those signings we made on Friday helped get us through.

“In the end we managed to get two teams out and, bizarrely, both won so it turned out to be a great weekend for the club.”

Among those on the casualty list were Jon Ralph and Ricky Whiting. Both were injured at work.

Scaffolder Whiting slipped and suffered suspected cracked ribs while Ralph turned his ankle while installing block paving.

“You couldn’t make it up last week,” said Hake.

The Ites have also snapped up teenager Chris Carcary - son of first team coach Murray. He claimed an assist when coming off the bench in last Saturday’s 3-2 win over Meridian.

Former player Dave Ayeni also returned to the club to make up the numbers in defence.
