Sheppey United conceded four more goals on Tuesday night in a home defeat to Erith Town – they head to Herne Bay for a third time this Saturday in the Velocity Trophy

Sheppey United’s poor recent form continued with a heavy home defeat on Tuesday night and the message from the management is ‘Let’s stick together’.

The Ites lost 4-1 at home to Erith Town - the visitors clinching their first league win of the season - on Tuesday, a result which followed a 3-0 weekend defeat at Sevenoaks and last week’s 7-1 thrashing at Three Bridges in Isthmian South East.

Assistant boss Tommy Osborne said: “The only way you can come out of a tough spell is by sticking together. That’s what we’ve got to do. There is no other way. There’s no other choice.

“The minute everyone starts pointing the finger and says, ‘it’s not them, it’s him’, you’re bang in trouble.

“We’ll train on Thursday as a group, and we’re all big enough and ugly enough to take this on the chin.

“You get plenty of pats on the back when you go through good spells. When you’re going through a bad spell like we are now, you have to deal with it.”

The Ites had a couple of chances through Rolando Onu on Tuesday night before conceding their first goal on 39 minutes against Erith, Tom O’Connor given room to shoot from the edge of the box following a free-kick.

Sheppey started the second half brightly, with Onu having another chance saved, but an Andrew Dythe corner was parried into his own net by keeper Harry Brooks.

Brooks turned a shot from Mal Turner over the bar, either side of two Eitel Goueth efforts that were saved at the other end. With 69 minutes gone, a looping effort from substitute Dieko Falade got Sheppey back into the match.

Goueth had a shot deflected over the bar after a spell of pressure but hopes of a fightback were extinguished when Lorenzo Lewis converted after Manny Oluwasemo’s shot had come off the upright. Mecca Maxime-Samuels cut in from the wing to curl home a well-hit fourth on 88 minutes.

Osborne said: “It’s really disappointing because we just gave ourselves too much to do.

“The first two goals we conceded were really soft and we’ve then got a mountain to climb.

“We got ourselves back in the game [at 2-1] but I think you’ve got to give credit where credit’s due to the opposition. I thought they took their third and fourth goals well, both were very good finishes.

“We shouldn’t really be putting ourselves in a position where we’re having to chase the game.”

Sheppey United’s recent form;

It’s 14 goals now conceded in their last three league games - some comedown from a 2-1 home win over pre-season title favourites Sittingbourne prior to those three defeats.

Osborne said: “You don’t become a bad team overnight but at the moment, the goals we’re conceding are far too soft, and that is a problem that has to be addressed very quickly.

“It’s not just about the back four because their first goal [on Tuesday] comes from a set-piece where all your team is defending, whether you’re a midfielder or a defender.

“You can pick holes in goals all of the time that are scored against you, you can say it should have been stopped at source. As a team we’re not taking responsibility of defending our box.

“It hurts us as the management and it hurts the players as well. Me and Kevin still trust the players we’ve got, we really do. But there does have to be improvements, and when I say improvements, it’s just the basics of getting tight to people, winning your headers, winning the first ball, winning the second ball in your own box, and we’re not doing that. It’s costing us dearly.”

Isthmian South East table

With FA Trophy action taking priority this weekend, Sheppey have avoided a blank weekend with a Velocity Trophy second round match at Herne Bay.

It will be the third time in the opening two months of the season that the Ites have visited Bay, with defeats already in the Kent Senior Cup and the league.

Sheppey are still looking for their first success away from home this season.

“We’re approaching it like with any other game,” said the assistant boss.

“At the moment, there’s probably seven or eight places in our team up for grabs. It’s another game where the players have got a chance to try and keep their shirts but at the minute , unfortunately, there’s not loads of them doing that.

“I think Herne Bay have recruited well. I quite like the signings they made over the summer, and I think they’ll be strong this year, so it’s going to be a difficult game.”

Sheppey will be hoping a few of their players can shake off knocks. Lex Allen, Medy Elito and Danny Leonard all passed a fitness test before Tuesday’s game so they could play.

Left-back Archie Johnson is also playing through an injury at the moment and Jacob Lambert is still out injured.

“It is a little bit of an injury crisis,” Osborne said. “Sometimes you can use that as an excuse but over the course of the season you will pick up the injury suspensions and you’ve just got to deal with that.

“We’re not using that as an excuse and as a squad, I include myself and Kevin (Watson, the manager) in that, we’ve got to improve.”
